Lawrence Kansas Web Design: Friday Funday!

It’s Friday, and time for another edition of the Funday rundown!

If your business is looking to spice up its Facebook landing page for its fan page property, here’s a quick link to an article with some tips for creating a better page: http://mashable.com/2011/02/04/design-facebook-landing-page/.  It is a little heavy on the coding side, but it does show you the real how to of creating a good looking and professional looking page.

The Super Bowl is Sunday, and while my Vikings came no where close to getting to the big game this year (or even the playoffs), the real reasos to watch for me is always the commercials and the hype that goes with it.  Mashable has a great writeup on advertising plans some of the big names are using this year.  I am a fan of user generated ads, but I don’t know how I feel about the practice of putting your Super Bowl ad on YouTube BEFORE the big game.  Movie previews are fine, but I don’t know how smart it is to run your ad to generate excitement for your ad in another place.  I am a firm believer in using video to extend the life of marketing messages, but I am not sure how this will work out, specifically for VW and their force ad.  You can see the article here:  http://mashable.com/2011/02/04/super-bowl-ads-social-media/

And lastly, the folks at Fast Company did a piece on the effectiveness of the Old Spice Body Wash ads from earlier in 2010.  You can read about the info graphic here: http://www.fastcodesign.com/1663161/infographic-of-the-day-how-that-old-spice-campaign-helped-the-brand.  I did like this spot when it first came out, and again the ads themselves were helped by adding the pieces to YouTube and other video sites to help extend the life of the campaign.

And on a last note, I have started putting out some free WordPress themes.  They are free for use for any and by anyone.  I plan on selling themes on my site down the road, but for now, and in an act of good faith, I have decided to add to the internet just ever so slightly by putting some free themes out there.  I hope to have about 100 free themes available before we start selling customized themes.

Thats all for now.  I hope everyone has a good week, and we’ll see you next Friday!

Lawrence Kansas Online Marketing: Friday Funday!

For those of you who are unsure of whether Facebook is here to stay or is simply a fad, the folks at Socialhype and OnlineSchools.org have put together an interesting infographic that looks at Facebook users. 1 in every 26 HUMANS logs in at least one a day; not Americans or Europeans, but Earthlings :) You can view the article and graphic at Mashable.com.

Keeping with that trend, another report shows that social media participation increased 20% in 2010.  The report noted too that of all social media users, only 29% use micro-blogging platforms such as Posterous, Tumblr and Twitter.  You can read the article on social media participation to learn more.

The folks at Buffalo Wild Wings have put together a great promo that includes the use of smart phones and real life gaming.  The basic gist of the promotion is that customers can engage in little mini-games that give them rewards that can be redeemed on site as well as bringing them closer to a large real world prize.  Mini games, which include taking a picture with a fan of the opposite team, are a great way to engage and generate some great user content.  You can Buffalo Wild Wing’s Promotion Site to see what they are doing.

And lastly, my sister told me about these DJ Earworm Videos, so I’m going to include it as a good example of mass collaboration and what can happen to your content in the hands of others. Enjoy and have a great weekend!
